Spring represents the Wood Element, the East and the vibrancy of the rising sun. Each day can feel like the awakening of a gigantic force or rebirth. The energy of Spring signals anticipation, we know to expect it but we’re not sure exactly when it will come. There is tension building all around and when it finally manifests, it is bursting with determination and renewed potential. Nature’s blossoming and the warmth of the sun build powerful momentum. It is the best time for planting seeds of creativity, getting “out there” with ideas contemplated over winter, planning and organizing the future. Our vision brightens and our perspective opens up to limitless possibilities. We feel inspired to push through our own limits. There is an increased sense of enjoyment related to change as we embrace a future that is full of hope. Consequently, it is a forceful energy, a time when we are vulnerable to opposition. If things don’t go our way or we are met with obstacles we may be quick to temper (eg. road rage), blow a fuse, and react with resistance. The emotion related to Wood is anger. It isn’t negative in itself since it can be an engine behind the drive to push through and persevere. Without some anger which can be transcended into endurance, goals may not be achieved. Equilibrium is not the avoidance of anger but the awareness of it without getting attached; allowing all emotions to coexist in harmonious balance. As such, Spring is a great time to practice adaptability and flexibility with the ultimate goal of accepting life (and the self) as it is.

When all circumstances are prosper a seed grows into a sprout, straight and tall. As it reaches for the sun, it often makes its way through and around obstacles. Most of the time it isn’t easy, yet we find sprouts that grow in drought, on rocks and surprisingly through concrete. These challenges are a reality, they give birth to struggle and tension. They also create the drive to overcome, in this way Wood houses the spirit of Perseverance.
